Saying Goodbye to Blogger

This will be our last weekly wrap-up post on this blog because next week we'll be launching our new website. Though we loved using Blogger to write these weekly updates for our community, one benefit of our new site is a blogging feature. From here on out, you can check gctv.org on Fridays to find out what we've been up to---simply click on the blog link near the top of our homepage. We won't take down this blog, however, so if you're feeling nostalgic you can always come back here and read our older posts.

This week we were very busy helping to disseminate information about storm damage, putting the finishing touches on our new site, planning for the Franklin County Fair Parade, and assisting a multitude of producers with their shows.

As you can imagine, our producers were busy too. The highlight of the week was when Dave Roulston, host of "Franklin County Matters", interviewed 2nd Berkshire District State Representative Paul Mark. You'll be able to watch that interview on Cable Channel 15 soon and we took advantage of Representative Mark being in our studio to get his thoughts on redistricting (check out the story on our homepage for more). Other new shows to look for soon include episodes of "Reading Shakespeare" (Tom Roulston takes on the Scottish play) and two classes from the Greenfield YMCA.

That's it for now, make sure to check out our new website next week (the launch is set to coincide with the fair parade on Thursday but we'll announce it on our Facebook Page, and in the local forums we post to, when it's up) and let us know what you think about it.

Family Week at GCTV

On Monday morning, "The Dukes of Sports" host Russ Brown brought his father and grandchild with him to the studio for a taping. Russ' dad made a wonderful guest commentator while his grandchild finally got a chance to see where grampa makes his tv show. The staff, meanwhile, appreciated the chance to meet some of Russ' family.

Thursday morning's "Local Bias" shoot was also a family affair in a way. Dr. Andrew Blais interviewed Paul Richmond---a local writer, poet, publisher, and activist. Paul also happens to be the host of "Imagine" on WMCB 107.9-lp FM. You'll be able to see their conversation on Cable Channel 15 within the next two weeks.

Airing on GCTV now are two interesting pieces of programming that came from local government events held Tuesday evening and Friday morning. Our Station Manager recorded the Special Greenfield Town Council Meeting (in which the councilors discussed upcoming repair work on the middle school roof) on his way home on Tuesday and our New Media Producer came in early on Friday to attend the swearing in ceremony of Greenfield's new "Special Police Officer". Both of these videos can also be viewed on our homepage.

While our New Media Producer was at town hall, the rest of the staff was assisting the Greenfield YMCA as they recorded two new shows in our studio. Keep an eye out for them during the coming months.

Short But Busy Week

Once we re-opened on Tuesday, after the Presidents' Day holiday, we had producers coming and going at a hectic pace. Three crews had taken out equipment over the weekend which then needed to be checked back in, "Franklin County Matters" edited their latest show with help from our staff, one of our producers recorded the Greenfield Planning Board Meeting, and our monthly board meeting took place.

On Wednesday, local artist Brent Eaton spent the afternoon filming in our studio while the folks from "Luz en Las Tinieblas" (Light in the Darkness, formerly "Iglesia Pentecostal Luz de Salvacion) edited their weekly worship service on one of our PCs. At the end of the day, members of the Greenfield High School Music Parents Association (GHSMPA) met up with our station manager in preparation for their telethon next week. Each year the parents of GHS musicians take over our airwaves for an evening to raise money for the great programs that Paul Calcari runs. The kids entertain while the parents answer the phones and take your donations. It's a win win! This year's event will take place on Wednesday, March 2nd, from 6pm to 9pm on Cable Channel 15. Be sure to check it out and "pitch" in.

Thursday brought staff and volunteers from both the Greenfield YMCA and Baystate Franklin Medical Center ("Healthbeat") into our studio for shoots. In addition, an employee of The Body Shoppe received training on one of our Macs so that he could put together the first episode of their new series. Finally, our staff headed over to Greenfield High School in order to broadcast the Greenfield School Committee Meeting.

Today while you were hopefully reading this at home, warm and dry, the intrepid folks from "Healthbeat" ventured out into the weather to edit the show they recorded yesterday and additional phones were installed for the GHSMPA telethon. Keep an eye out on our homepage for a story about the music parents' fundraiser and next week we'll let you know how it went.

This was a busy week!

Following up on a terrific end to last week, having the governor here on Friday, we spent this week following local politics, improving our website, and helping several local producers get their message out to the public.

Last Friday afternoon, about 50 people packed into our studio for a taping of “Mayor’s Memo”. Various state & local officials, citizens, and members of the media were on hand not only to watch Mayor Martin interview Governor Patrick, but to take a trolley ride around town with them afterwards. Alicia accompanied them on this trip and had a blast. It was nice for her to see politicians both demonstrating a sense of humor and discussing important issues in a realistic way. She got some great footage that you’ve already seen on our homepage but hopes to get a longer, documentary style, piece from the tour up soon.

Greenfield’s mayor returned to GCTV on Tuesday to record another episode of his show, this time featuring Lisa McGuinness championing our public schools, which will begin airing on July 6th. Other interesting guests here this week included representatives from NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) on “Franklin County Matters” and New England Farmers’ Union (NEFU) President Annie Cheatham on “Local Bias”. Jonathan Mark, of Fly By News, also brought in a couple of experts to discuss Big Pharma.

The last two shoots mentioned above, combined with Jonathan Mirin’s Piti Theatre Company’s production of “28 Feet”, filled our studio for the entire day yesterday. Producers were good about getting in and out on time so all the shows were able to go smoothly. “28 Feet”, Jonathan’s one man comedic play about dealing with his own medical issues, was open to the public and had an audience of about 20 people. You’ll be able to watch all of these shows on Cable Channel 15 soon and some of them at gctv.org as well.

Referencing our Video on Demand Player reminds us that we want to welcome Greenfield YMCA Programming to our online offerings. These episodes join videos of “Healthbeat”, “Local Bias”, “Valley Homegrown”, “Mayor’s Memo” and more. This is also a good time to mention that there is a new look to video content on our website.

We are now able to embed single videos from our Video on Demand Player so you can watch our top community coverage stories without leaving our homepage. This also means that producers will be able to link directly to their shows from, and even embed some of their episodes on, their own webpages.

Wow, we really did a lot this week! Oh, as promised, we also recorded Greenfield’s Inauguration Ceremony on Thursday and you can see it, along with some interviews with newly elected officials, on our homepage. Check it out!

Busy Week for Producing Content

Our field equipment (mostly the new HD cameras and Manfrotto tripods, but also some microphones, lighting equipment, and headsets) got a lot of use this week. The projects they were checked out for ran the gamut from a world record attempt to a local fashion show and we hope we'll be able to share them with you soon.

In the office, several organizations finished editing their programs including the Greenfield YMCA, The Mediation & Training Collaborative, and Baystate Franklin Medical Center. The YMCA's Sustaining Campaign show will premiere on Friday, April 23rd at 8PM.

Finally, our studio was graced with some special guests when Jonathan Mark brought a crew in on Tuesday afternoon to shoot an interview with Star Wars Defense Program whistleblower Robert Bowman and Drew Hutchison produced a two-part "Local Bias" with Garry L. Earles on the topic of bullying. The first of the two parts will air on Wednesday, April 21 at 5:30PM.

You can check our schedule or keep reading this blog to find out when all of this great new content will air.

P.S. Between Noon and 4PM today all of our editing PCs were being used by producers and about 75% of our field equipment will be checked out over this long weekend so I'm sure we'll be seeing even more pieces soon.
